Spray Booth Design Breakdown: Crossdraft Booths

Crossdraft spray booths offer owners a blend of affordability, reliability and quality, which makes them a primary choice among manufacturers in a number of industries. While the nature of their design does have some drawbacks, there are also plenty of reasons to consider this type of booth for your production line. Crossdraft units can be customized to fit product or component specifications as needed. As with any other kind of spray and paint environment, it's essential for the user to understand their own requirements and expectations before making a final selection.

Fundamentals of Crossdraft Booth Design

Crossdraft booths are best for parts that require a basic finish quality. These booths can be designed to handle a wide variety of parts and for all different sizes. The term “crossdraft” refers to how the air travels through the booth, in this case, horizontally along the “cross section” of the booth.

Crossdraft can be defined as a booth where air passes from the front of the booth (sometimes through supply filters) and then horizontally towards the booth’s rear exhaust chamber. This horizontal flow causes air to flow uniformly over the painted part as it enters an exhaust filter chamber. The exhaust chamber incorporates the exhaust filters so the air can be filtered from any paint overspray as it passes through the filters. The clean air is pulled by the exhaust fan through these filters and exhaust duct system as it is discharged cleanly into the atmosphere.

Advantages of Cross Draft

Due to their relatively simple design, cross draft booths are generally a low-cost and minimally invasive addition to a production environment. Crossdraft are also extremely cost effective for users that need to heat or cool their airflow since they require significantly less air volume to cover the same product surface area.

Crossdraft booths can also be cost effective for owners to add since they don't require construction of downdraft pits. The cost of concrete work can be prohibitive for many companies, which makes crossdraft a prime choice depending on cost and quality needs. These spray booths can also achieve comparable results to alternative designs with a lower vertical profile, which makes them compatible with a wider range of work spaces.

Noteworthy Design Limitations

Potential drawbacks for booth operators:

  • Higher chance of product contamination from dirt or dust
  • Health hazards to workers inside the booth
  • Difficulty managing over-spraying with one-way airflow

While the simple and direct airflow of crossdraft booths is suitable for a variety of industrial and aerospace applications, it does have some significant limitations. Since air passes through the entire chamber from front to back, there is a risk of dust and contaminants landing somewhere on the object during painting or finishing. Operators also need to be careful about overspray, since excess spray must pass through the entire chamber before reaching the exhaust filters.

Crossdraft booths also offer less protection to painters and other workers inside the unit. If they need to move around the object or vehicle in the chamber, then they will need to spend at least some time in the back-draft of the overspray. This limited flow direction can create a hazardous environment for workers, so manufacturers must take additional steps to protect employees to avoid unhealthy exposure to dangerous substances.
